Once upon a time, and yes, it does feel like an ancient time when we used to wait for the postman. The postman who was a saviour for all of us waiting for that much awaited letter from our sweetheart! Waiting to hear from the most important person in our life was excruciating. Romance, friends and family, all depended on how and when the postman would come with his big bag full of letters strapped on to his back. No wonder the postman was the most sought after person, and he could bring a smile of anticipation on every person's lips just by showing up at their place! But this was certainly better than the really ancient times when messages were sent and received by airmail, a.k.a the pigeon carrier. Remember "Kabootar Jaa Jaa Jaa..."? Apart from that, there are also stories of some desperate souls resorting to sealing a bottle with a handwritten note inside it, and throwing it out into the sea, in the faint hope that it would reach their beloved one...

More recently, the trill of the telephone has been pure music to the ears. And I still remember it ever so clearly as to how our faces would light up with happiness and amazement on picking up the phone and finding it to be from our loved one, who was miles and miles away. The euphoria on that discovery was so much that the static playing spoil sport with a constant buzz, the volume of which went from a low hum to a loud whirr…, in our ears didn’t matter at all. The wide-spread adoption of computers left most people wide-eyed with astonishment at what technology could accomplish. Messaging climbed to another level with chat and e-mail. Sending love notes, mushy poems and romantic e-cards in the matter of a few seconds was the easiest thing to do. And keeping in constant touch became so much more easier. Pushing up the excitement quotient even many more notches higher today, the video calling feature is "The next big thing". Video calling has brought the world closer. Gawky teenagers trying to woo their lady love, young lovers and old sweethearts are but a touch of a button away from each other.

Teenagers can use video calling to propose to their lady love without fear of feeling the hard whack of a well heeled sandal or a delicate hand on their person. If the one being proposed to is a boy and he declines, the girl has the liberty of shutting him out in mid sentence at the press of a button (and being shut out like that is frustrating and insulting. Don’t believe me? Then try it out and see what happens). And, most importantly, if he or she does accept the proposal, one can be happy knowing that they will always be close at hand 24*7. And this time, it will be not only their written thoughts, nor only their love-laced voice, but even those lovely and deep expressions on their face that we so much crave to see. Romance is evergreen. It doesn’t understand age and generations. For the young and young-at-heart lovers conducting a long distance romance, video calling is a boon keeping them connected visually and via chat. They can talk to each other and whisper sweet nothings at any time of the day or the night. Today one does not have to wait for the pigeon or a message in a bottle. And I am sure, none of us would have that much patience either. This is the "instant" age, and all it takes is a few clicks, and Voila!!! You have scaled mountains and crossed seas and are on screen opposite your loved one! So what are you waiting for? With 3G services already launched by some of the networks, go get yourself and your loved one a 3G enabled phone.
