Buying a used car may not be as exciting as buying the best car in India, but it surely helps to keep in mind some important points while buying a used car. So here are the top 10 tips that will help you buy a good second hand car:
  1. Before buying a car, whether new or second-hand, always make sure that the car manufacturer in question has a reputable track record in terms of reliability and after-sales service. This is important if you do not want to end up spending a fortune on its repairs or upgrade.
  2. Check out all the important little detail of the second hand car, including its fuel economy rating and the cost of the insurance for a car. Checking the fuel economy is important to ensure that the car does not guzzle a lot of fuel thereby burning a hole in your pocket.
  3. Arriving at the appropriate price of a used car is as much science as art. If you offer too little, the deal would not go through. At the same time, do not accept the first offer from the seller either. Be ready to be on top of your bargaining skills.
  4. If possible, take your car mechanic along when going to check the car to be purchased. The mechanic is the best judge on whether the car has been through any accidents or whether it needs any heavy-duty repairing. If it does, then that isn't the ideal car for you.
  5. You can find out the used vehicle value by using online research or by searching the local newspaper for cars having similar condition.
  6. Try to keep a safe distance from very old cars which possess plenty of electronic gizmos. Not only are they costlier to repair, but aren't very reliable as well.
  7. If possible, go for a test drive and try out everything, such as the windows, locks, air conditioner (if any), radio, etc. Also check the brakes.
  8. Try not to go for cabs, rentals or ex-police cars because typically these are not that well maintained and are driven very hard.
  9. Go for the vehicles which have higher mileage if you intend to use it for driving on main roads frequently.
  10. Last, but most important, go for a car that you would love sitting in. After all, a car is a reflection of your personality and taste!
